In Shocking Upset, Taylor Swift Nabs Coveted "Taylor Swift Award"

Taylor Swift has received the coveted ‘Taylor Swift Award’ at the BMI Pop Awards. Twist!

According to the BBC, Swift told the Los Angeles audience upon accepting the prize, “If they had chosen someone else to give the Taylor Swift Award to, I’d be kind of bummed about it.”

Still, perennial awards bridesmaid Katy Perry no doubt sorrowfully folded her acceptance speech and popped it back in her pocket when Taylor Swift’s name was called out from the podium. Next year, Katy.

Swift welcomed the winged statuette with grace and gratitude, not once mentioning the transparent pandering by BMI, who seemingly contrived a brand new award just to get her to the ceremony.

(BMI vice president Barbara Cane justified it by saying Swift had “transformed pop culture”. It’s okay Barbara; we get you just wanted to hang with Tay. We would invent an award to hang with her too.)

Swift becomes only the second person in the BMI Pop Awards’ 64-year history to receive an eponymous prize. Back in 1990, Michael Jackson was given the ‘Michael Jackson Award’. There were apparently no meaningful contributions to music in the following 26-year period to warrant another named award.

In case you’re wondering, “Why am I only just hearing about the BMI Pop Awards now?” and “Did LL Cool J host the ceremony?”, some background. Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) measures the songs played on radio and television, passing along royalties to writers and publishers.

Their annual awards’ ceremony honours the most performed pieces of music over a 12-month period.

If you were anywhere near speakers this past year, you already know that Swift’s 1989 hits were played far and wide. Therefore, it’s not too absurd that they felt the need to recognise her achievements.

However, the numbers don’t lie. Swift was outplayed in the past year by “Uptown Funk”, which was named Pop Song of the Year. Jason Derulo, Flo Rida and Rachel Platten were also recognised for writing the much-played hits “Trumpets”, “Somebody” and “Fight Song”, respectively.

Yes, it’s basically a ceremony that celebrates tunes you are literally exhausted with. It’s fine you didn’t see the

  • I'm really tired of y'all acting like Taylor Swift is the be all and end all of pop music. Are you really trying to say the contributions she has made to music are on par with Michael Jackson's? She drops one good album and now y'all just won't let it die. How badly do y'all want this girl to like you?
