Awkward: Student Literacy, Numeracy Hasn’t Improved, NAPLAN Results Show

We fail English? That’s unpossible.

Despite having received record government funding over the past twelve months, preliminary NAPLAN results show the overall literacy and numeracy skills of Aussie students have failed to improve.

According to ABC News, the writing results for students in Years 7 and 9 have decreased significantly since 2011. Promisingly, Years 3 and 5 have seen an uptick in reading, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

Overall, reading scores and numeracy scores have increased by 0.4 per cent and 1.26 per cent, respectively, since 2013, while writing scores have declined by 0.2 per cent.

Nonetheless, Education Minister Simon Birmingham has said the plateauing results are “not good enough at a time where we’re putting record levels of funding into Australian schools”.

"We need to focus on evidence based measures that will get results for our students because today's results once again show that, despite significant funding growth, we are not getting sufficient improvements in student outcomes.”

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy was introduced in 2008 and puts students to the test, annually, on the aforementioned subjects. It gives the country a snapshot of state-wide and national progress in each field.

For instance, ACT is apparently best in reading and grammar, while Victoria is the top state for writing and numeracy.

Meanwhile, Queensland and Western Australia showed the most improvement.
