Stay Calm: A "Chicken Run" Sequel is Coming to Netflix

Those chickens are up to something.

It has been twenty years since Chicken Run was released, with it deservedly becoming the highest-grossing stop-motion animated movie ever.

Considering how much time has passed since the original film, it seemed likely we would never find out what became of Mrs. and Mr. Tweedy's chickens. Despite The Hollywood Reporter revealing in 2018 that another flick was in the works, we hadn't heard much since.

However, it has now been announced that there will finally be a sequel, with streaming giant Netflix scooping it up.

As reported by Variety, Studiocanal has closed a deal with Aardman Animations to transfer the sequel rights to the international streaming giant.

The sequel will follow Ginger, who is now living in a human-free chicken paradise. She and Rocky hatch an egg together and have their daughter, Molly. Except, as Molly grows up, she quickly starts to outgrow the island.

On top of that, there's a terrible threat on the mainland, which forces Ginger to rally her feathered troops and go to war to protect their freedom.

While Peter Lord (The Pirates! Band of Misfits) and Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit) directed the first film, the Oscar-nominated ParaNorman and Flushed Away director Sam Fell is set to helm the sequel.

"We've got the perfect story, and the relationship with Netflix is kind of perfect as well because they celebrate the filmmaker and are so filmmaker friendly," Lord explained.

"I feel now we can make the Chicken Run sequel we want to, the one we really care about."

Fell also admitted they've been working on the script for years.

"I tell you it will be fun and games seeing these chickens back in action," he said.

"All the gadgets, the kit, we're kind of moving towards an almost-tribute to Mission: Impossible with elements of heist and how they're going to pull off this amazing break-in."

At this stage, it looks like Mel Gibson won't be reprising his role as Rocky. According to the New York Post, Gibson has been axed from the project following accusations he levelled anti-Semitic remarks at actress Winona Ryder.

We're not too sure when the sequel will land on Netflix, but production will begin in 2021, so we probably won't see it for at least a couple of years.

The upcoming movie is also expected to be released in cinemas.

Now, this is eggsellent news.
