So, Turns Out Mashd N Kutcher Created “Get on the Beers” in Only 15 Minutes

We chatted to them about their iconic hit.

Like many musicians, international touring act Mashd N Kutcher were forced to cancel an entire year of scheduled shows as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of playing to live crowds across Australia, Asia, Europe, India and North America, the duo consisting of Matt Minor and Adam Morris joined the rest of the country in lockdown and attempted to find ways to fill their new-found time.

Looking for absolutely anything to remix, the dance and electronic band turned to the television for inspiration.

The result: “Get on the Beers”.

As Matt tells Student Edge, they were inspired to create the bop featuring Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews telling Melburnians to “get on the beers” after they saw him announce the easing of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions.

“With press conferences all over the TV, that was about the only thing we could remix, so we did,” he says.

“It was never anything to do with politics. It was more about the message of someone who is in such a serious position saying, ‘get on the beers’; it’s a very Aussie thing to say.”

Unsurprisingly, the track has become instantly iconic. A TikTok video showing a crowd moshing to the remix at Perth's Wine Machine festival went viral last month, and the duo’s Facebook video amassed 1.2 million views six days after releasing the banger.

At the beginning of November, “Get on the Beers” reached No.2 on the iTunes chart and cracked the top spot on the iTunes dance chart.

Matt believes the song has become such an anthem because it’s the perfect excuse for people to have a bit of a laugh during a global pandemic.

“It’s giving people a fun and light-hearted sort of entertainment,” he says.

“Now that the pubs are open, people can legitimately get on the beers. So, I guess for a lot of people being isolated in their own homes, the one thing they’ve been waiting for is to get back to the pub with their mates.”

Considering the success of the track, I’m surprised to hear that it only took Mashd N Kutcher a whole 15 minutes to make.

“The 'Get on the Beers' remix wasn’t something that took up a lot of our time,” he says.

“It was made in about 15 minutes and posted without much thought. So, the majority of our time has been focused around making original music.

“We’ve got quite a lot of it backed up now, so as things start to progress and we’re allowed to play more shows, hopefully we’ll start releasing some of it.”

Mashd N Kutcher have been busy touring since they formed in 2014. In fact, Matt and Adam were on the road together after only knowing each other for three months.

“We’re kind of like a married couple in a lot of ways,” Matt says.

“There’s some fights, there’s some happy times. It’s just like having a balanced relationship.”

When I ask whether we can expect to hear another epic remix soon, Matt reveals that they’re gearing up to drop another track on Monday.

“It’s a big collaboration and it’s coming on Monday,” he says.

“It’s something that brings together an Australian icon and an American icon, I’ll tell you that much.”

As for their “Get on the Beers” remix, we’re just waiting to see if it wins the top spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2020 (can Dan Andrews even be nominated?).

“I have no expectation for that to happen, but people keep commenting on the song saying they’re giving it their vote,” Matt says.

“I’ll let the people decide that.”
