Selfies Are Killing More People Than Sharks

The recent death of a Japanese tourist mid-selfie has taken 2015’s unlikely selfie death toll to 12.

As Mashable points out, this means selfies are killing more people than sharks.

With 12 selfie-related deaths since January, the very process of taking a photo of oneself has proven to be more fatal than battling one of nature’s fiercest predators.

(Eight people have died from shark attacks this year, by comparison.)

The aforementioned tourist – Hideto Ueda – died after attempting to snap a selfie at the Taj Mahal; in the process, he fell down stairs and soon after passed away from head injuries.

Three other selfie-takers similarly expired from a fall.

The second most common selfie death occurs when someone attempts to take a photo next to a moving train. You don’t need to be told what happens next.

Though Australia should feel immense pride for effectively coining the word ‘selfie’, please be careful out there and try not to show-off with your death-defying selfies. No one will ever be impressed by a selfie, unless you are Dwayne Johnson, or, maybe, if you can snag one with the Treasurer on Budget Day.
