Scarlett Johansson Is A Cyborg Now, According To The Trailer For "Ghost In The Shell"

Scarlett Johansson is a woman of many talents.

Over the past few years, she’s played everything from an operating system to a skin-hunting alien to a USB stick.

Now, she’s a cyborg, just as our cultural obsession/exhaustion with Westworld reaches its apex.

In Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell, she stars as The Major, a robotic counter-cyberterrorist working to bring down criminals with her feats of slow-motion martial arts.

Though the film's not due out until March of 2017, you can see her in action now, thanks to the release of the film's first feature trailer.

Based on the manga of the same name, Ghost in the Shell has been subject to criticism ever since it was announced Johannsson would take on the leading role. (She’s certainly adept at playing electronic devices, but the whitewashing of the original Major Motoko Kusanagi was a bridge too far for many).

It’ll be interesting to see if the film honours the source material, allaying fans’ concerns, or if it will be held up as example of Hollywood at its worst – continuing to cast white people in roles belonging to Asian actors, disregarding the culture those very films are pilfering from.

Judgment can be reserved until we see the final movie. Until then, we can ogle the eye-popping trailer, which is genuinely gorgeous.
