Remember Spy Kids? Strap Yourselves In, It’s Coming Back for a Reboot

Oh, Shiitake Mushrooms!
The legendary fever dream of a franchise that brought us electric gumballs and instantly appearing McDonalds microwaves is back.

On its 21-year anniversary, the original creator and director (ahem, creative genius) Robert Rodriguez announced the good news.
Alongside Netflix, Skydance and Spyglass Media, he’ll be bringing your fave childhood films back to the silver screen, following Spy Kids (2001), Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams (2002), Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), and Spy Kids: All The Time In The World (2011).

Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly, "I've been getting calls from all kinds of studios: 'Reboot Spy Kids.' 'Reboot Sharkboy.' Of course they want to. They're all sitting at home with their kids," in reference to COVID quarantining.
If you’re not familiar with the iconic series, it follows two kids, Carmen and Juni Cortez, as they follow in the footsteps of their secret agent parents. Chaos ensues.

For some reason, a stack of A-list celebs got on board, from Antonio Banderas to George Clooney. And if seeing them in a low-budget children’s movie isn’t surreal enough, here’s a clip of Steve Buscemi philosophising far beyond the intellectual calibre of what you’d expect from Spy Kids.
It’s unconfirmed as yet whether the original cast will be returning. All our dreams would come true if they did, but until we know, here’s a collection of completely out-of-context stills from the films for your viewing pleasure.
