PSA: Ikea Has Shared Its Iconic Swedish Meatball Recipe

Add making these to your list of #iso activities.

We've been missing out on a lot during the coronavirus pandemic. With cinemas closed, the release of highly anticipated films like A Quiet Place 2 and Mulan have been postponed, and we can't even head to our local pub to catch up with mates.

Perhaps the saddest loss of all: We can no longer have carefree trips to IKEA.

Remember the days where you'd get lost in the furniture and home accessories store, just waiting to stumble upon the perfect beside table, without the fear of catching COVID-19? Of course, the highlight was eating as many of IKEA's delicious Swedish meatballs as you could before leaving.

Well, it's time to get very excited because IKEA has released the recipe to making its legendary meatballs, posting it on social media for the whole world to see.

Yes, you read that correctly.

If the #iso boredom is really settling in, you can now entertain yourself by making these tasty little snacks. The best part: You won't need any screws for this one.

The recipe will make you a serving of around 16 to 20 meatballs.

What ingredients do I need?

Meatballs:

500g beef mince
250g pork mince
1 onion, finely chopped
1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
100g breadcrubs
1 egg
5 tablespoons of full-cream dairy milk
Generous salt and pepper

Iconic cream sauce:

Dash of oil
40g butter
40g plain flour
150mL vegetable stock
150mL beef stock
150mL thick double cream
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

How do I make it?

  1. Combine beef and pork mince and mix thoroughly to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
  2. Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for 2 hours (to help them hold their shape while cooking).
  3. In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add your meatballs and brown on all sides.
  4. When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven, 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius, and cook for a further 30 minutes.

As for the cream sauce:

  1. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Whisk in the plain flour and continue cooking, stirring continuously for 2 minutes.
  2. Add the vegetable stock and beef stock and continue to stir. Add the thick double cream, soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
  3. Bring to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken. Continue to stir.
  4. When ready to eat, serve with your favourite potatoes: either creamy mash or boiled baby potatoes.

Get cooking!
