Our Fave Looks and Weird Moments from the 2023 Met Gala

Our Fave Looks and Weird Moments from the 2023 Met Gala

Featuring cats and an attention-stealing cockroach.

The Met Gala has returned for another year.

This year’s theme pays tribute to the late German designer Karl Lagerfeld, and the accompanying exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty".

Cosmopolitan reports that there has been backlash against this year’s theme, as Karl has been known to have made "extremely offensive towards many marginalised groups throughout his lifetime", including his comments on gay parents, the #MeToo movement, and women’s bodies in general.

Despite the controversy, the Met Gala has gone ahead in full force - and we’re absolutely living for the many different celebrities embodying this year’s theme who Karl would’ve otherwise turned his nose up at.

Here are some of our fave Met Gala lewks, and also some moments that left us scratching our heads…

Our new Little Mermaid drips in Gucci.

Halle Bailey exudes elegance in a custom Gucci sequin-embroidered gown and ruffle coat, and it’s giving mermaid vibes.

And that touch of red in her hair? *chef’s kiss*

Rihanna’s transformation on the carpet is a #win.

I was undecided on how much I loved Rihanna’s Met Gala outfit when she first came out, reminding me of myself wrapped in blankets first thing in the morning.

The sunnies with huge eyelashes were definitely a lewk, and I have no doubt her lips are wearing one of her signature Fenty makeup red shades.

It wasn’t until a little transformation on the carpet until I fell in love with the fit. When the hood and the glasses came off, I was obsessed with everything that was hiding away – the dress, the hair, the massive necklace.

It’s a yes from me.

Vogue is obsessed with Cardi B’s looks (and so are we).

I didn’t even realise that one of my fave looks from the Met Gala was Cardi B’s second outfit (of three!) of the night.

From the hair, to the ‘shirt’, tie and gloves, all the way down to the big floral details… I’m still picking my jaw up off the floor.

I’m not alone in my obsession with Cardi B at the Met Gala – Vogue wrote “for most people, nailing the perfect look for the Met Gala is hard enough. But Cardi B tripled that task on Monday night: between leaving her hotel and the end of the Met Gala, Cardi wore three looks.”

The Met Gala cockroach.

Yes, you read that right.

According to TIME, this Met Gala cockroach was distracting the crowd who were waiting for Rihanna to arrive.

Variety made the cockroach a star, videoing it running up the steps and strutting its stuff.

Unfortunately, we’re sad to tell you all that he was stepped on and didn’t make it.

Anne Hathaway in Versace.

That’s it.

I have no words.

Suits that made a statement.

The Met Gala has no time for your usual black and white suits, so here’s some of our fave suits that stood out to us.

Doja Cat and Jared Leto channel Karl Lagerfield’s cat.

When it comes to the Met Gala, you gotta go all the way, and two celebs decided to channel Karl’s cat ‘Choupette’.

Doja Cat dressed as a cat? An opportunity well taken, I say. Did she take it a little too far in this interview?

Harpers Bazaar describes Doja Cat dressed in a hooded gown by Oscar de la Renta, which took over 5,000 hours of work to create, and includes 350,000 silver and white bugle beads.

Complete with cat ears on the hood, and makeup giving her nose a cat-like look, I can’t help but keep looking at this fit.

If that wasn’t commitment enough, check out Jared Leto, who arrived in a giant costume.

Same, Lizzo. Same.

Let us know which looks from the Met Gala you loved!
