Olympic Sprinter Tyson Gay's Teenage Daughter Shot Dead

The 15-year-old daughter of Olympic sprint athlete Tyson Gay has been fatally shot in Kentucky.

According to police statements and a coroner's report, Trinity Day was pronounced dead at the University of Kentucky Medical Centre on Sunday at around four in the morning.

She was caught in an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles outside of a Kentucky restaurant. Police spokesperson Brenna Angel said Trinity is not believed to have been in any of the vehicles involved. There's a search underway for the second vehicle involved in the shootout.

Word on the situation is two people have been detained for questioning and the case is being treated as a homicide investigation.

An outpouring of support has flooded the online arena, as you would expect from such a tragic loss of life.

Trinity was a rising star on the Lafayette High School track team in Lexington. Apart from her athletic achievements, she also wanted to become a surgeon. She'd hoped to achieve the same Olympic glory as her father.

Speaking to the Daily News Trinity's mother, Shoshana Boyd expressed her concerns about the senseless nature of shootings.

"I just want people to stop shooting and realise who they're hurting. It's just random. They don't understand, they don't understand who they're hurting," she said.

"I should never have to bury my child."
