Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License" Has Officially Made Streaming History

Tbh, we're not surprised.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few days, you will have seen the name Olivia Rodrigo appear on your social media feeds a lot. 

If you're still not entirely sure who the 17-year-old is or why she has seemingly already achieved world domination, let's get you up to speed.

Olivia released her debut single "Drivers License" on Friday, 8 January and it's undoubtedly the first big track of 2021. It tells the story about getting your—you guessed it—driver's license while going through a terrible breakup.

The ethereal music video for the song has amassed over 23 million views on YouTube as of writing this article.

Be warned: It will make you sob hysterically (hopefully that wasn't just me). 

Okay, but who is she? 

Similarly to stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Zendaya, Olivia belongs to the Disney fam. Her career kicked off when she was cast in Disney sitcom Bizaardvark at the age of 13. 

However, it's more likely that you'd recognise her from her starring role as Nini in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (yes, that's actually the show's title), which you can stream on Disney+. 

If TikTok is your favourite app, you've probably heard the Gold-certified song she co-wrote for the show called "All I Want". 

Given her undeniable talent, Olivia quickly built up a massive fanbase.

So, how has "Drivers License" made streaming history?

Well, on Monday, 11 January, the song set the record for the most streams in a day for a non-holiday song, with over 15.7 million global streams. 

From there, Olivia broke her own record on Tuesday, 12 January by achieving over 17 million streams.

According to Genius, the previous record-holder was Ariana Grande, whose "7 rings" had received 14.9 million global streams in its first day of release. 

There are predictions that "Drivers License" could even debut in the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, so keep your eyes peeled.

At the moment, the song is also No.1 on the Spotify Australia Top 50 chart and Apple Music's Top 100: Australia chart, so there's a chance it could debut at the peak of the ARIA Singles Chart too. 

When Olivia shared an excited snap of the charts, Taylor Swift even commented on the post and stated: "I say that's my baby and I'm really proud." 

It's fitting considering fans are calling Olivia the next Tay Tay (others have also compared her songwriting skills to Lorde). 

One thing is for certain: We'll be belting out "Drivers License" until it dominates all of the charts.
