So close!

Lil Nas X, go buy yourself a new cowboy hat. You earned it.

The banger that Billboard refused to count on its Country Songs chart has just become the longest running #1 overall single in America’s history.

With 17 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, it has leapfrogged previous record-holders "Despacito" (by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee) and "One Sweet Day" (by Maria Carey & Boyz II Men).

Lil Nas X thanked his fans, from the toilet.

It’s a triumph for hip-hop/country hybrids; Twitter s***posters who also happen to write indelible musical hooks; and even Billy Ray Cyrus, who gave the tune a signal boost by appearing on the first of its many, many remixes.

Unfortunately, here in Australia, Lil Nas X couldn’t compete against another duo: Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes. After four weeks in the runner-up spot, their tune "Señorita" finally jumped to #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, bringing the reign of "Old Town Road" to an end after 13 weeks.

The current ARIA record is 15 weeks at #1, which is held by Ed Sheeran’s "Shape of You". Lil Nas X could, theoretically, still break the record, but he would need to return to #1 for three more weeks.

Most likely, he will have to settle for equal second place, tying Coolio’s "Gangsta’s Paradise" and "Despacito" with its 13-week run.

But who needs records when you managed to move the music industry to your whims and dominate the cultural sphere with a two-minute troll about cowboy ephemera, while also becoming an LGBTQIA icon and delighting children in the year's best viral video?

There's really only one more thing to say:
