A New Syllabus Will Grade Students On School Musicals

Crack out the celebratory lemon-infused honey tea! (You know, for the vocal cords.)

From 2016 onwards, students will be able to study musical theatre in Australian schools.

The Australian Music Examinations Board unveiled a new syllabus this week that gives students a chance to be formally examined, practically and theoretically, on such musicals as Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Tim Minchin’s Matilda and more. (So, get ready to see this going on a bunch.)

The introduction of the new syllabus will no doubt be welcomed by students who devote weeks and months to their school musical yet receive no marks or formal credit for their commitment.

It’s hoped that making musical theatre a subject in high school will help out those students planning on studying the craft at a tertiary level.
