New Greens Senator Set to Become the Youngest Ever in the Senate

Last week, Senator Ludlam and Senator Waters handed in shock resignations over their dual citizenship statuses.

Now, 22-year-old Jordon Steele-John from Western Australia will take Ludlam's place, making him the youngest Senator to ever serve in the upper house.

Steele-John has been an active Greens member for a number of years and has said that he will use his role to advocate for young people and people with disabilities.

In a statement, Steele-John wrote that while he was shocked at the sudden resignation from his mentor Ludlam, he was excited to take on this rare opportunity.

"We are only at the beginning of this process and there are still a lot of steps to go, but I am ready to do this job. My decision has come after careful reflection, as befits the significance of the role," he wrote.

"The future belongs to young people: we need to be represented in our parliament. There is a very large group of people who will now have a voice that truly understands and represents their interests."

Wyatt Roy, the former member for Queensland's Longman electorate, was the youngest member to ever serve in the House of Representatives (lower house) at age 20 before he was ousted in the 2016 election.

Now, let's see how Steele-John represents the young people of Australia. It sure is nice to have someone close to your age in Parliament.
