It's A Date: NBN Expected To Be Rolled-Out By 2020

The National Broadband Network has pledged to complete their rollout by 2020. Hey, it’s a date!

According to ABC News, the NBN has put a plan in place to speed up the implementation of their fixed-line network.

Not a bad idea, considering ‘speed’ is the name of the game here.

NBN chief executive Bill Morrow has revealed how new contracts with five companies to help deliver high-speed broadband to four million homes and businesses will streamline their process.

"The objective is to get to all 10 million homes that exist today and then there will be a number of new homes that will be built over the course of the next five years, so when all said and done it will be well over 11 million homes that will have access to a fast broadband network," he said.

It is hoped this new plan will temper concerns of lacklustre broadband coverage in rural areas, which accounts for approximately 3 per cent of Australian homes. There, a download limit of 20gb a month is imposed.

Morrow insists delivering “good basic broadband” is a decent first goal, before they begin the task of finding ways to “meet the demands for people that need more than 20 gigabytes of data.”

The rollout of high-speed broadband is being conducted via the hybrid-copper/fibre to the node model. This involves running fibre to a single neighbourhood pillar, and having the pre-existing copper network connect that node to individual homes.
