No Biggie, But Nat Fyfe Won The Brownlow And Played With A Broken Leg This Weekend

Nat Fyfe won the 2015 Brownlow Medal last night, becoming the first Freo Docker to take the AFL’s top player prize.

It followed Fremantle’s disappointing finals loss to Hawthorn on Friday evening, during which Fyfe – demonstrating Julie Corletto levels of badassery – played with a broken leg.

(Given that this past weekend was a long one in WA, you can probably assume Fyfe achieved a lot more than his fellow sandgropers.)

The 24-year-old fractured his fibula in the first quarter, following a collision with Hawks defender Brian Lake.

Still, he came off the bench on multiple occasions and remained one of the best on ground.

On Monday night, he collected 31 votes to secure the Brownlow victory, trumping last year’s winner, West Coast’s Matt Priddis (on 28).

You could say there’s something in WA’s water (and even then, you might simply be referring to the bounce and lustrousness of both Fyfe and Priddis’ hair).

Fyfe is the first ever player to be named “best-afield” by umpires nine times in one season.

While accepting the best and fairest accolade, Fyfe honoured his fallen teammates

“It’s greater than me; it’s the Fremantle footy club and all our members and fans and supporters,” he said.

“We can take this home and really celebrate it as a club and as a community.”

Fyfe will require surgery ahead of the 2016 season, though Freo’s general manager of football operations, Chris Bond, described it as “a fairly minor procedure.”
