My Favourite Charity

There are so many different charities out there, how could one possibly choose a favourite?
Well, after some debate, I’ve selected my personal favourite: CARE Australia.
CARE Australia “[seeks] a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security." Basically, CARE Australia strives to create a world in which social justice exists, where everyone has equal opportunity and where the world finally overcomes poverty.
Poverty is a massive world problem and CARE Australia encourages us – teenagers and young adults who’ve grown up in families with some of the highest incomes in the world – to take action and donate or volunteer for CARE Australia and beat this problem once and for all. Can you imagine going without dinner, even just once a week? Or not eating breakfast because you needed to save your food for your starving little brother?
This is why CARE Australia’s work is so important. CARE Australia also takes action in other areas in need of major attention too, including gender equality, emergency relief, climate change, health, education and water and sanitation. We, as young people growing up in a first world country, take each of these for granted.
CARE Australia aims to address the most important issues our world faces today, and they need our help. But before we grab out our wallets to donate, how do we know CARE Australia isn’t just another charity pretending to value certain morals or ideas just to make money? How do we know our money isn’t going towards the boss’ six-week holiday to Europe or another staff function?
Well, the not-for-profit organisation spent 90 per cent of their funds on addressing these matters in 2014. Only seven per cent was used on fundraising costs - which is necessary in order to make enough money in the first place - and a tiny 3 per cent on administration. This definitely shows that CARE Australia really does care (get it?) about social justice and equal opportunity for everyone.
They’ve been able to help over two million people across 23 countries, including Cambodia, Pakistan, Ethiopia and East Africa. I also think it’s important to mention that CARE Australia is not religious or affiliated with any political parties, which makes it unique amongst the many religious organisations around the world today. It shows that these values are held by people who simply want to make a difference and help create equality for those around them. So that is why I believe CARE Australia deserves all the donations and is my favourite charity! You can check out CARE Australia’s website (and maybe even donate) at www.care.org.au.
