Business is Australia's Most Popular Uni Course + Other Stats From the 2021 Census

You might have an inkling of what your fellow peers are getting up to at uni, in their vocational training and part-time jobs. But newly revealed 2021 Census data just made it official.

The data show the state of work and study across Australia, and there are some expected and unexpected findings. Let’s get into it.

The Accommodation and Food industry has the youngest workforce.

Know anyone flipping burgers and serving tables? Or is that what your own weekends look like?

The Census revealed that Fast Food Cooks had a median age of 18, and Café Workers had a median of 21.

45% of the whole industry is aged under 25 years, making it the youngest workforce in Australia.

No arts subjects are included in the top eight most common fields of study.

Topping the list of the most studied fields in Australia is Business (1.1 million students), Teaching (836 thousand), Nursing (608 thousand) and Building (580 thousand).

These are followed by Human Welfare/Services, Accounting, Electrical Engineering/Tech, and Food and Hospitality.

More than half of Australians now have a qualification.

We’re an upskilled nation, with over 11 million Aussies having a qualification to their names.

The Census defined a ‘qualification’ as being either at the vocational or tertiary level.

This number has increased by 20 per cent since 2016.

The overwhelming majority of Aussie teachers are female.

And by overwhelming, we mean almost all.

In Early Childhood Teaching, a whopping 98 per cent of teachers are female. This goes down to 85 per cent in Primary School, and 62 per cent in Secondary School.

And lastly: there are only 160 people in all of Australia employed at video rental stores.
