Michael Caine DNGAF, Definitively Spoils the Ending of "Inception"

Michael Caine, what have you done?

For the past seven years, film lovers and cineastes have wrestled with the ending to Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

Spoiler alert for a movie that came out in 2010.

In that final sequence, after Leonardo DiCaprio’s mind-thief Dom Cobb completes his mission and returns home to his family, he sets off a spinning top to see if he’s still stuck in the dreamworld. But, alas, the film cuts out before we can see the toy potentially topple over (indicating whether or not he’s in reality).

It’s a beautifully tantalising note to linger on, orchestrated artfully by director Nolan and scored by Hans Zimmer. It looked a bit like this:

But here comes Michael Caine like a wrecking ball to give you a definitive answer to the previously ambiguous finale, like it means nothing to him.

Speaking at a Film 5 Summer Screen showing of the flick in London, Caine told the crowd that he too was unsure of Cobb’s status at the end of the movie.

"When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to [Nolan] 'I don't understand where the dream is'," Caine explained, according to The Independent.

"He said, 'Well when you're in the scene it's reality.' So get that: if I'm in it, it's reality. If I'm not in it, it's a dream."

You may remember that Caine plays DiCaprio’s father-in-law in the flick, and greets him at the end of the movie upon his arrival home. So… it’s definitively not a dream then. Cool.

The movie’s a bit less special but hey, that’s okay when you’re a bad boy like Michael Caine who treats our feelings like bugs, to be squashed and disregarded.

Next, he’ll tell us that Christian Bale really did clone himself in The Prestige too.
