Mexico’s President Just Told Donald Trump He Ain’t Paying For That Wall

Donald Trump’s fly-in visit to Mexico did not quite go as planned, with President Enrique Pena Nieto today telling the Presidential contender his country has no interest in paying for Trump's mooted border wall.

According to the ABC, Nieto took to Twitter to explain what had transpired during their meeting.

"At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall," he said.

Prior to the Tweet, Trump had told press at a joint news conference that the wall had been discussed, but payment had not.

Trump’s wall has been a fixture of his Presidential platform ever since he announced his candidacy in 2015. Over the past few weeks, Trump had publicly downplayed his previous promises to deport all 11 million undocumented Mexican migrants living in the States.

His commitment to a “big, beautiful, powerful” wall across the U.S.-Mexico, however, has remained steadfast.

He left Mexico for Phoenix, where he delivered a speech on immigration. In it, Trump walked back his previous walk-backs, insisting he will not offer any path to legal status or citizenship for undocumented migrants.

He also insisted Mexico would still pay for the wall.

"They don't know it yet, but they're going to pay for [it],” he said.

He then pledged to begin “moving [undocumented migrants] out [of the United States] on Day One” of his presidency.

As of this writing, the New York Times’ statisticians say Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has an 87 per cent chance of winning the election in November. Trump’s chances sit at 13 per cent.
