"Malcolm & Marie" Starring Zendaya Comes to Aussie Netflix on 5 February

Let's get Zendaya that Oscar.

Calling all Euphoria fans, your girl Zendaya is coming back to Aussie screens in February with a gem she and John David Washington filmed during the first round of quarantine in 2020: Malcolm & Marie.

The film, directed by Sam Levinson and captured by Marcell Rev, explores the romantic drama between a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) after they return home from a celebratory movie premiere.

Unexpectedly, the evening takes a turn and the two are forced to face smoldering tensions, unpack their relationship, and test their love, strength, and partnership.

Shot entirely in black and white, the trailer gives audiences a sneak peek at Malcolm & Marie’s raw beauty and the cinematic impression that Levison aimed to capture. (It also demonstrates how damn talented these two actors are.)

The once-secret film is said to be an "ode to great Hollywood romances" according to Netflix and is shrouded with intrigue and excitement from anticipating fans.

Of course, that's hardly surprising considering it was shot right as the coronavirus pandemic was ramping up internationally in June and July, leaving many fans wondering how exactly they managed to shoot it.

According to Deadline, the cast lived in "separate dwellings" for two weeks before they arrived at Caterpillar House where the film was shot. All the cast and crew wore masks and practiced social distancing when they gathered.

Now, just six months later, the highly anticipated monochromatic film is set to premiere in select cinemas in January and Netflix globally on 5 February 2021.

Netflix snagged the film for $US30 million during the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, beating out other streaming giants HBO and Amazon.

After a special screening that was held on Friday 8 January, critics are now sharing their first impressions. Some of them are glowing reviews, ngl.

Since the trailer's release, many excited viewers have been quick to guess that Zendaya and Washington will both be serious Oscar contenders.

Levinson—known for creating the series Euphoria—also wrote the script and produced the picture for the upcoming film.

Well, if the trailer and hype is anything to go by, an Oscar or two would not leave us shocked.
