How to Celebrate Halloween 2021 in a COVID-19 World

Get scary the safe way
With spooky season just around the corner, many of us around the globe are prepping for another disappointing Halloween stuck indoors thanks to pesky COVID-19.
But where there’s a will, there’s a way, and if you want to enjoy your 2021 Halloween without a hitch, here are our creative picks on how to safely celebrate Halloween in a COVID-19 world, and if you're still stuck in lockdown.

Host an online Halloween party.
If you’re on the slightly older side of being a teen, you may have aged out of trick or treating, which means that you’re usual go-to this time of year is a Halloween party.
Of course, most of us can’t do that right now, so instead of hosting a real physical party, why not do the same event over Zoom with your best mates?
Get the video call crackin’, the music pumping, and some spooky mocktails flowing and you’re all set.
This is a great excuse to get all dressed up in the Halloween costume you’ve been planning all year, as well as meet with your friends in a safe and socially distanced way.
All the fun of getting dressed up, dancing to music and socialising without the COVID risk.

Do a trick or treat hunt at home.
If you still live with your parents or some willing roommates, why not ask them to hide a bunch of your favourite Halloween lollies around the house for you to scavenge for?
This is kind of like an Easter egg hunt, but the spooky, grown-up version.
Not only will this give you a fun activity to do with your housemates or parents, but it’s a great opportunity to get lollies and snacks without having to go trick or treating.
Plus, a tough challenge is always good to get those brain juices going.

Have a spooky movie marathon.
If you’re not keen on dressing up or hunting for snacks, a more low-key activity that you should defs get around is the spooky movie marathon.
Chuck on some Edward Scissor Hands, The Conjuring or even A Quiet Place and prepare yourself for the jump scares.
Pair these films with some lollies, popcorn and a dark room, and you’ve got the perfect set-up for a night of fright.

Cook up some homemade scary snacks.
There’s no shortage of Halloween recipes in existence on the internet, so why not get together with your fam or roommates and cook up some toffee apples, ghost cookies, finger sausages or meatball eyeballs?
Sure, some of these sound gross as heck but surely making them has gotta give you a giggle.
If you missed the cooking craze of the first few lockdowns, now’s your chance to chef it up for Halloween.
Film the ghost trend TikTok video.
This one’s an oldie but a goodie.
If you missed your shot last year, a super fun and creative way to get involved in Halloween is to make one of those cute ghost trend TikTok videos.
Get together with your sibling, roommate or parent, chuck a blanket and some sunnies on and take some adorable pics wandering around your house.
There are a couple of tutorials online that show you how to edit your photos, so you can get that creepy look and then all you gotta do is upload it onto the app and enjoy.
Have a virtual pumpkin carving competition.
Finally, if you’re keen to take advantage of your Zoom membership, why not get together with some friends online and carve some pumpkins together.
Even if you don’t live in the US, Coles and Woolies often sell carving pumpkins at some stores around the country, so you can try out the American tradition for yourself.
Try this out just for fun or host a competition and wind up with a fun decoration by the end of it.

So, there you go. Just ‘cos you can’t leave your house this spooky season doesn’t mean you should miss out on Halloween altogether.
Soon, regular ol’ trick or treating and scary parties will be just around the corner, just hold on a little bit longer, and stay COVID safe in the meantime.
