Thanks, Tony: Macklemore's "Same Love" Is Back in the Number One Spot

The former PM called for "Same Love" to be banned from the NRL Grand Final and it backfired spectacularly.

All that publicity seems to have definitely worked in Macklemore's favour, seeing as his pro-marriage equality anthem "Same Love" has hit number one on the iTunes charts. It comes after former PM Tony Abbott called for the song to be banned, citing that sport should not be political (forgetting all the times that sport was very political).

Too right, mate. Last night Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull went on The Project and explained that Macklemore "should perform whatever he wants to perform, I mean for heaven's sake, it's the half-time entertainment at the grand final."

Even General Attorney, George Brandis, took the time to question Abbott's views on ABC News Breakfast. "It is one of his [Macklemore's] most popular songs, and for Mr Abbott or anyone else to say that it should be banned I think is a bizarre thing to say," Brandis said, adding the zinger: "I thought Mr Abbott believed in freedom of speech."

It wasn't looking great for Abbott. But then even Abbott's own daughter, Frances, added more fuel to the fire that was cooking her paps.

Expectedly, pro-same-sex marriage supporters took the chance to roast the "No" campaign and Abbott for the spectacular backfire.
