Maccas Will Give Away Free Loaded Fries In One Sydney Suburb Over The Weekend (And Some Residents Are Mighty Angry About It)

A McDonald’s pop-up restaurant in Sydney’s inner west will serve free fries to passers-by over the weekend.

According to News.com.au, “Fries With That” will open on Friday in the suburb of Glebe, closing on Sunday.

It is the first “fries-only” store for the franchise, and will be a testing ground for potential new toppings, including caesar sauce with bacon and parmesan, chipotle cheese sauce, sweet chilli and sour cream, pesto mayo and parmesan, peri peri cheese sauce and, the classic topping, gravy.

(Just a reminder to anyone who might want to visit their local Maccas and demand free chipotle cheese sauce chips, this is only going down in Glebe.)

Some residents of Glebe, however, are protesting the pop-up store.

The residents and business owners of Glebe Point Road (where “Fries With That” will live for 72 hours) are reportedly concerned the business is testing the market, with plans to eventually move in permanently.

Glebe Chamber of Commerce president Kris Spann told Fairfax that they’re ready for a fight.

"If they want to compete on coffee, if they want to compete on community connection, if they want to compete on locally and ethically sourced food then Glebe has got them covered," Mr Spann told Fairfax.

A McDonald's spokesperson sought to ease worries, saying, "we can assure the local community there are no plans for a permanent site in the area."

And yet, a Facebook group – entitled “McDonald’s, not on our corner” - is plotting to meet outside the store on Friday, where they will “make a decision about how to respond.”
