Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood Is Already Dead in the New "House of Cards" Teaser

Trigger Warning: This article discusses sexual assault.

Netflix has wasted no time in burying Kevin Spacey.

In a brand-new teaser for the upcoming sixth and final season of House of Cards—ominously titled "Grave"—Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood gives a brief, cutting eulogy for her late husband, Francis, who seemingly died sometime after the S5 finale.

It’s a clear attempt to distance House of Cards from its disgraced former star, who was accused in 2017 of multiple instances of sexual assault, not to mention harassment on the set of the show.

Netflix booted Spacey from HOC after the accusations came to light, and after mulling over some spin-offs, they decided to opt for a final season centered solely on Wright’s newly sworn-in President.

An earlier teaser saw Claire Underwood wishing a "Happy Independence Day" to herself, suggesting the absence of Francis/Spacey was a cause for celebration.

She’s even more merciless here, saying to Francis’ grave, "When they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard; and when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line," alluding to Spacey’s ruined legacy.

House of Cards returns, one last time, to Netflix on 2 November.

As for Spacey, it was revealed this week that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office won’t prosecute him over an alleged incident from 1992, as it falls outside of California’s statute of limitations (which is the amount of time in which they can reasonably charge someone for a crime). However, an accusation from 2016 remains under review, and six criminal cases in London are still being investigated.
