R.I.P. Jackie Trent, Writer Of The Neighbours Theme Song

Vale Jackie Trent, the singer-songwriter responsible for the Neighbours theme song.

Trent, a British writer who also penned tunes for Frank Sinatra, Petula Clark and Dean Martin, passed away at the age of 74.

According to the BBC, she died in hospital over the weekend after a long illness.

Though her name may not be as familiar as those for whom she wrote, she is responsible for one of the most ubiquitous works in Australian culture.

Along with her husband Tony Hatch, Trent wrote the theme for soap opera Neighbours while they were based in Australia back in the early 1980s.

The couple separated in 1995 and divorced in 2002.

Trent later marred Colin Gregory in 2005, with whom she lived in Spain until the time of her death.

As a tribute to the late Trent, listen to the first version of the Neighbours theme above, as performed by Barry Crocker in 1985. It is almost three minutes long and it is perfect.
