It’s Official: The Marriage Equality Postal Survey Will Go Ahead

The High Court has ruled in favour of the postal survey, so expect ballots from next Tuesday.

In case you didn’t know, the High Court of Australia heard two challenges to the Government’s proposed postal survey on marriage equality this week.

The first was mounted by Independent MP Andrew Wilkie and the second by Australian Marriage Equality, who both argued that the planned plebiscite (of sorts) and the way it’s being funded were unlawful.

But the High Court this afternoon ruled in the Government’s favour, allowing the $122 million postal survey to proceed later this month.

"There is now no legal impediment to that postal survey proceeding and all Australians having their say on this important social question," said Attorney-General George Brandis in the Senate, shortly after the decision was delivered.

Enrolments for the postal survey have ended, though more than 90,000 newbies registered with AEC before the deadline.

Ballots are expected to be mailed out from next Tuesday, September 12. You should have received yours by September 25 at the latest. All ballots must be returned by November 7; however, you are highly encouraged to send yours back by October 27, to ensure it’s counted in time.

The AEC will announce results on November 15 at 11:30am AEST.
