Introducing the Cast of Aus Politics, 2022: New Names You’ll Wanna Know About

In the new season of Canberra’s ongoing drama show, there’s a whole lot of unfamiliar faces.

First and foremost, Anthony Albanese has officially been sworn in as Australia’s 31st Prime Minister.

You might have just got the hang of saying his name, but there’s a bit more learning to do.

In the upcoming weeks as newly elected MP’s settle into their roles, you’ll probably be inundated with familiar (and unfamiliar) faces.

At minimum, all you really need to know are the Labor cabinet ministers (aka the main characters of government).

Only four, aside from Anthony Albanese, have been officially sworn in.

All the ministers are usually sworn in at once—but due to an important ‘Quad leaders’ meeting in Tokyo, things had to be a little delayed and only four have been officially sworn in (aside from Anthony Albanese).

So, here’s who we know so far.

Richard Marles, Deputy Prime Minister.

Role: To become Acting Prime Minister if Anthony Albanese is unable to undertake his role for a short time (such as travelling to Tokyo this week). Deputy Prime Ministers also hold another cabinet portfolio, but this has not yet been determined. The Australian reports he looks to be headed for Defence Minister.

Background: Richard Marles has been in politics for 15 years and has been the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party since 2019.

Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Leader of the Senate.

Role: As Minister for Foreign Affairs, she will oversee international diplomacy, formulate foreign policy, and meet with foreign representatives all over the world.

As Leader of the Senate, Penny Wong has overarching responsibility for all policy areas and acts in the upper house. It’s like being the government’s spokesperson in the Senate.

Background: Penny Wong has been in politics for 20 years and was the first woman to be elected as ALP Senate leader.

Jim Chalmers, Federal Treasurer.

Role: To oversee government expenditure and revenue collection. The Treasurer also delivers the Federal Budget each year.

Background: Jim Chalmers has been in politics for nine years and has a PhD in political science.

Katy Gallagher, Minister for Finance, Minister for Women and Attorney-General.

Role: As Minister for Finance, Katy Gallagher will supplement the role of the Treasurer and oversee expenditure and financial management. Think of it as a ‘Deputy Treasurer’ type of role.

As Minister for Women, Katy Gallagher will ensure government policies take women’s issues and gender equality into account.

As Attorney-General, Katy Gallagher will act as a legal adviser to cabinet and also cover legal affairs, and national and public security.

Background: Katy Gallagher has been in politics for 21 years and is a classically trained cellist.

With a diverse mix of people already announced for cabinet, we're on the lookout for who will be joining the line-up next.
