How to Survive Awkward Group Assignments

How to Survive Awkward Group Assignments

It can be super uncomfortable and awkies🥴

When teachers pick the groups for assignments, it’s not always going to be the greatest thing in the world.

(Even when you get to choose your own groups, sometimes group assignments can still descend into chaos).

Knowing that you are going to be separated from your friends and placed in a group with people you aren’t so close with can be uncomfortable

Sometimes it’s just a *tad* awkward working with people you’ve barely (or never) spoken to.

However it’s also a good opportunity to work on your communication skills and possibly even make some new friends too.

Here is how you are going to overcome this situation.

Get to actually know your peers 👥

Learn about who they are, what they do and what they enjoy. Some similar interests and topics may pop up in conversation.

And who knows, you might make a new bestie out of it.

Plus, being friendly and open-minded makes it a lot easier to get group assessments done.

Be the boss 😎

We don’t mean be controlling or yell at your peers or be rude. But be the person who takes initiative to get the assignment started if no one else is.

Ask your group what role they would like to take on and take into consideration their ideas. Being the boss doesn’t mean be bossy.

Most of the time, people like someone who is going to help lead the group.

Be the person you would want in a group assignment.

Listen to your group members 👂🏻

Make sure you are listening to everyone’s ideas and acknowledge what they are saying.

Even if the group doesn’t use those ideas in the end, you'll want to encourage your peers to participate and contribute.

There’s nothing fun about being ignored and not having a chance to speak your mind in group assignments.

Communicate 💬

Be honest if things are getting in the way of you and your part of the assignment.

Everyone knows life can be stressful and everyone has different things going on, so if you are struggling with something, let your group know and they can help out.

This also makes it a comfortable space for everyone in your group to communicate about things.

Also, don’t be afraid to call out slackers (in a constructive way).

This is a group assignment and you and the rest of your group deserve everyone to be giving an equal amount of effort.

Sometimes people just need to be told to get it going and get a move on.

Good luck with your next group assignment ⭐
