It’s Your Turn to Change the World: Enter Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Competition

Take these steps for your chance to win a sweet $10K.

This article is presented in partnership with Samsung Solve for Tomorrow.

You’ve got your big idea, now what?

It’s time to enter Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) competition. Open to young Aussies aged 14 to 24 years old, if you are considering a future in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) Solve for Tomorrow is for you.

The best part? Entering is super simple. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how you can enter Solve for Tomorrow.

Choose your challenge.

You can enter your idea into three different categories.

First, decide which category your idea falls into. The categories are education, sustainability, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

You can enter as an individual or with a group of fellow students/your friends.

And entering with his friends was one of the best parts according to Michael Nefiodovas one of the members of Team ORS, the winning entry from Solve for Tomorrow 2023.

"That was part of what made it so fun, we got to work with people from all different areas of study and share our expertise," he told Student Edge.

"Trying to make something whether it's a presentation or whether it's an actual product, and then justifying it's existence in a presentation it's super fun but also quite rewarding.

"So it's a good combination, you get to learn and get to hang out with your friends."

Write and submit your 400 word entry.

Once you know what category your idea falls into, it’s time to write a 400-word entry to submit.

Now we know 400 words seems like a lot but you’ll find yourself running out of words quickly! Make sure you use your words wisely.

To really make your entry pop, you’ll want to make sure you:

  1. Identify an issue in your community.
  2. How you can solve it using science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Bonus! Post your content online.

For the first time, there’s a Social Amplify prize up for grabs too.

All you need to do is post creative social content online, raising awareness of a STEM solution for your community. Here you could provide judges a tease of your big idea.

To be considered, post a short video on any of these social media platforms: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and LinkedIn. Make sure your video is public and you tag @SamsungAU and use the hashtag #SFT_AU_2024. You could win a Samsung Galaxy A55, Smart Monitor M70D and Galaxy Buds2.

What happens if you’re shortlisted?

This year, a panel of judges will review all 400 word entries and then shortlist the promising ones to invite them to attend a Design Thinking workshop.

Here you’ll receive mentoring and feedback on how you can take your idea to the next level. It’ll help you consider things about your idea you might not have previously and, hopefully, help you take the steps to make your idea come to life.

Submit a video pitch.

Finally, you’ll be asked to submit a video pitch about your idea incorporating what you've learnt since submitting your first entry. Think about how you can creatively exhibit your idea. Even if video is not your strong suit, you could use graphics or imagery to show how your idea will work in the real world.

The runner-ups from Solve for Tomorrow 2023, Sustainabili-tree, decided to combine their creative skills and used claymation to depict their idea.

"That's the mix of my team, me and my brother we're more sort of creative and then my mate George does science and math," Flynn Megahan from Sustainabili-tree told us.

Get onto your submission today and you could win up to $10,000 for your big idea! Find out more info about the comp and submit your entry here.

Entries are open now and close 11:59PM 15 September 2024. Terms and Conditions of entry apply.
