Have you ever had an idea you think could be cool to make a reality, but is also life-changing?

You know, the type of idea you daydream about in class but feels almost too out of reach?

We’re here to break the (good) news to you: you can make it a reality and your idea will potentially win you up to $10,000. Thanks to Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) competition.

Open to young Aussies aged 14 to 24 years old, if you are considering a future in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) the Solve for Tomorrow competition is for you.

What is the Solve for Tomorrow competition?

Originally launched in 2011, the Solve for Tomorrow competition is all about empowering young people to use their STEM knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.

This could be something that has impacted your family, your friends or even your wider community.

For example, our friends at Team ORS who took out the grand prize last year, came up with the idea of using UV lights to attract pests and by incorporating a computer vision system to record and analyse them.

The goal being to help farmers better understand their pesticide use and make informed ecological and economical decisions. They even took it to their local swamp to test it out!

You can enter your idea into three categories.

What are the categories?

Once you’ve finessed what issue it is you are solving, the first step is to put together a concise, written application up to 400 words. Then you need to decide what category your application best fits into:

Education

Do you have an idea about how you can make school easier for others? Or maybe you think you can do it better than your teachers 👀 This category is about promoting critical thinking and developing opportunities for students and educators.

Sustainability

If you’ve got an idea about how we can better conserve our natural resources, enter your idea in the sustainability category.

Like mates Flynn, Mikey and George, three friends who won the Minor Prize in the 14–18-year-old category last year. Their brill idea was a service which would pick up Christmas trees after the holiday season and recycle them into gift wrapping for the next year.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Maybe you’ve thought about different ways we can help break down prejudice barriers within our society. Enter your idea in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category. This category is looking for ideas about how we can make life a better place for different communities or minority groups.

What’s different this year?

This year, once you’ve submitted your 400 word application, Solve for Tomorrow will contact shortlisted entries to attend a Design Thinking workshop.

The mentoring workshop is designed to help you develop your idea further. This will help you consider elements you might not have thought about or show you how to get more specific about the issue you are going to solve.

From there, you’ll submit a final video pitch and then it’s up to the judges!
