"All of these different people and opportunities acted as steps on the staircase for me to reach that ultimate goal."

This article is presented in partnership with Monash Business School. You can listen to the full podcast on Spotify, Apple Music, or right below.

Keen on a career in marketing but wanna go beyond textbook theory and lecture rooms?

Aleks Corke is a Monash Business School graduate who did just that. While completing his double degree in a Bachelor of Marketing and Arts (majoring in Theatre) plus a diploma, he helped launch an app, worked for an audio experience company, and eventually landed himself a dream job.

We’ve teamed up with Monash Business School to bring you a special five-part podcast series called “What I Wish I Knew About Studying Business”, and Aleks is our third impressive guest.

We chatted about over-dressing to impress and building an app, and it’s all as good as it sounds—so press play on your next commute.

A bit about Aleks.

Aleks reminisced on his school experience, describing his fellow students as a little bit “edgy, alternative, with an ambivalent attitude towards life”. That chill vibe didn’t stop him from creating an intense “game plan” for Year 11 and 12 though.

He now looks back with amusement at the lengths he went to. “In Year 11 I tried to dress myself to fit into a classic marketing student mould,” he laughed, “then in Year 12, I decided ‘I’m gonna be aggressively myself’”.

We asked Aleks what he’d tell his over-dressed, wide-eyed Year 12 self and he said, “just chill out a bit, man!”

"My advice would be to take a step back and just don’t feel like you need to have all the answers straight away. You will find the path that best suits—just have faith in that journey.”

Aleks’ uni experience.

Like most students, Aleks’ first day of uni wasn’t perfect.

“I remember I went to the same introductory lecture twice. From 9:15 to 9:45 I went to ‘Welcome to Monash’. And then from 9:45 to 10:30, I went to ‘Welcome to Monash’,” he laughed.

“It was a bit of a whirlwind those first few weeks.”

Wanna know more? Of course you do!

Be sure to hear the rest of Aleks’s story and get all of his advice on our third episode of “What I Wish I Knew About Studying Business” on Spotify or Apple Music and check out more information about Monash here!
