"Hotline Bling" Memes Have Taken Over The Internet And That’s Fine

We asked our members: Are memes ruining the internet? The consensus was a resounding, “No.” Here’s our favourite response.

Memes exist solely for the purpose of entertaining us and making us laugh. Isn’t it better that we are able to make a joke or parody of everything for our simple enjoyment?

The Internet is filled with an assortment of memes, with different variations all relating to various pop culture references. The most recent meme to take over the Internet is Drake’s unique style of “Hotline Bling” dancing. Has this meme not brought joy and pleasure to all it has reached?

Memes distract us from our own, over-serious lives and replace those occasional feelings of despair and sadness with hilarity and laughter.

I mean, how can you not laugh as Drake swings a tennis racquet while dancing terribly?

Plainly said, memes are hilarious and provide us with a running chain of jokes that are understood on a near global level.

Not only do memes connect with us on an individual level, but also, they allow us to connect with individuals everywhere who have seen the meme and enjoyed it.

A whole sub-culture of memes has been firmed due to its monumental success in not only youth culture, but also overall pop culture.

This creates an online environment where individuals are able to engage with one another through the uses of memes. This can be done by simply liking, commenting or sharing each other’s creations.

An entire network is created because of one phrase, photo or video. Memes allow us to participate with pop culture on another level, creating deeper connections with social media and art itself. They give us the ability to laugh and even inspire us to create our own memes, allowing us to release and exercise an inner creativity that we may never have discovered otherwise.

By creating a meme, we manage to contribute to culture and influence others in the process. The increase of memes on social media platforms such as Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram is simply a response to the rising popularity of meme culture. So, can we really say how many is too many?
