Graduation Movies to Get You Through the End of High School

While high school graduation is stressful, chaotic and confusing – it’s also an important part of your life in creating lasting memories and learning to become an adult.  

Graduation can be scary and not knowing what you want to do after high school can feel daunting. While we have resources that can help, sometimes there’s nothing quite like a good movie to help you feel less alone. 

Thankfully, there are plenty of high school graduation movies out there to binge during this bittersweet transition. 

These flicks can provide some laughs, potentially tears and maybe even a bit of nostalgia as you reflect back and look forward to adulthood.

Superbad (2007) 

A high school cult classic (IYKYK) this film follows three friends; Seth, Evan and Fogell (AKA McLovin) as they try to have a memorable last hurrah at a party before going off to different colleges. Despite their meticulous planning, everything goes wrong, and it results in some funny antics from Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen and more. 

High School Musical 3 (2008) 

Who can forget Zac Efron’s humble beginnings in High School Musical? The familiar faces of Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Chad, Taylor and Sharpay come together for one final number before they say goodbye to high school. This movie also made us really want to become a theatre kid 😫 

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) 

If you love an oldie but a goodie, this one is perfect for you. It follows Ferris Bueller faking a sickness to stay home and spend the rest of the day with his best friend and his girlfriend. All the while, his dean is trying to catch him out. It’s got some great lines with themes of freedom and individuality are all wrapped up in a perfectly 80s way. Plus, there’s a random musical number for no apparent reason. 

Monster’s University (2013) 

Okay so we know this movie isn’t based in high school but hear us out! This movie is a heartwarming prequel to Monsters Inc giving us some backstory on Mike and Sully as they face college life and feeling the pressure of facing up to their potential. Charmingly animated, it teaches the importance of never giving up on your goals and believing in yourself despite what people say. 

Booksmart (2019) 

In this film we follow two high school best friends Amy and Molly as they ditch the books for a night of reckless fun in order to “catch up” to their classmates before they graduate. It’s incredibly charming, with so many memorable moments. 

The Breakfast Club (1985) 

 

Another cult classic high school film that shouldn’t be missed on your list. Five stereotypical high school students are stuck together on a Saturday in detention – the princess, the athlete, the criminal, the brain and the basket case.  As time in their confinement passes, they realise they’re actually not that different from one another.
