How'd he do it?

Well, Student C can see that the dude in front of him is wearing a white hat. He also knows that there is someone behind him, and that student can see both B and C's hats.

If Student C was wearing a white hat, Student D would immediately know he is personally wearing a black hat. However, because D initially stands there in silence, C is able to answer - with certainty - that he is wearing a black hat.
