Here’s All the Juicy Goss From Last Night’s Met Gala

Here’s All the Juicy Goss From Last Night’s Met Gala

Breaking down this year’s theme and why some celebs were a no-show.

Last night, we all watched as the world's biggest celebs gathered together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to show off their gorgeous, wild and even wacky looks on the red carpet.

That’s right, last night was the Met Gala.

This is the time of year when we all collectively browse the internet in our jim-jams and judge the heck out of every rich celeb’s outfit. Why? ‘Cos, we’re all fashionistas of course.

In case you missed the coverage of the event and just want the CliffsNotes version, we got chu. Here’s all the juicy goss from the 2021 Met Gala.

The theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.

You can’t have the Met Gala without some ambiguous theme, and this year it was a doozy.

This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which means… Um…

Look it isn’t super clear, but the Curator for the Met’s Costume Institute Andrew Bolton told Vogue that it’s all about American designers and showcasing their efforts both past and present.

"I think that the emphasis on conscious creativity was really consolidated during the pandemic and the social justice movements,” he said.

“And I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective.

“I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance. I think young designers, in particular, are at the vanguard of discussions about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency, much more so than their European counterparts, maybe with the exception of the English designers.”

In fact, the theme is going to continue into 2022 with “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”.

Don’t ask me how it differs ‘cos I don’t have a clue, but I guess we’ll find out next year.

Billie Eilish looked like a Marilyn Monroe vision.

Teen queen Billie Eilish basically stole the show in a stunning peach gown from Oscar de la Renta.

Draped in silver jewellery and showing off her blonde locks, Billie rocked the Marilyn Monroe look with zero effort, but the choice wasn’t just for show.

Thanks to some cheeky negotiating behind the scenes, Billie convinced Renta to cease all sales and production of fur completely, all in exchange for wearing the gorgeous dress.

Plus, not only was Billie a guest at last night’s event, but she was the youngest ever co-chair, so what an opportunity to make a positive ethical difference.

“I always wanted to do this, I was just scared,” Billie told Vogue live-stream host Keke Palmer about her look.

“I didn’t feel comfortable in my skin.”

Some celebs were a no-show and Rihanna rocked up late.

In the worst news, some of the Met Gala’s most iconic faces just didn’t show up at all.

The most notable on the list included Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Kylie Jenner.

At first, most of the internet was in fits of fear that the queen of the Met Gala herself: Rihanna, was also a no-show, but she eventually turned up with A$AP Rocky looking cosy as heck.

If I could wear a doona and look this fancy, I’d be wearin’ my bedsheets everywhere man.

As for the actual no-shows: Ari didn’t share an explanation, but she is likely off enjoying her newlywed life with her now-husband, Dalton Gomez.

Kylie Jenner addressed her lack of attendance in an Insta story, saying she was sad to not make it.

“I’m so sad I couldn’t make it this year. I can’t wait to see all the looks.”

Her explanation doesn’t give much away either, but it likely has something to do with her pregnancy, which she officially announced just last week. From the pics she shared, she seems pretty far along, so we don’t blame her for looking after herself and bub.

Last but not least is Ms Minaj. Nikki appeared to be absent from the event ‘cos she wasn’t keen on getting vaxxed. Not good.

Unfortunately, the rapper posted a very short tweet stating “Won’t b there” because the Met Gala was only accepting vaccinated guests.

While it sucks to not see her there, it also sucks that she’s not on team jab. For accurate COVID-19 vaccination information, check out the Australian Department of Health’s website.

Lil Nas X dressed as a gold king (as he should).

The musical king himself, Lil Nas X took us on a legit journey with his Met Gala fit.

With three layers of gold, glitter and absolute god energy, Lil Nas was giving us full icon vibes.

While everyone and their mum are living for all three fits (especially the final one-piece) I can’t help but notice that Lil Nas is channelling C-3PO from Star Wars in that shiny suit of armour.

I mean, if you’re ready to flex some fits, make some music, and defend the galaxy, go off queen.

Grimes casually brought a sword.

Next up is Grimes, and ngl she was legit born for this event.

The quirky artist showed up in this beautiful flowy, white and grey gown, covered in a pattern that mirrors the feathers of elegant birds, as well as a shiny silver mask that is not only safe but freakin’ amazing.

Although her fit was everything, she decided to pair it with a smol bible, and a legit huge sword.

I’m not sure how swords are American (and therefore on theme), but either way, she came lookin’ like she was about to conquer some kingdom, and it was a vibe.

Honestly, props to her for carrying it around all night, that thing has to be heavy.

Kim Kardashian was literally covered head to toe.

While Kylie didn’t make it to the Met, her sister Kim’s appearance was definitely noted.

Kim rocked up head to toe in a full black dress, cape, leggings, boots and mask. As in, a full-face mask. No eye, nose or mouth holes.

Not sure how she could see in this thing but the outfit sure was a statement.

There has been speculation that the fit was paying homage to Kanye West’s latest album Donda, despite the couple reportedly going through a divorce.

Either way, it definitely captured the attention of everyone there and online (prepare for the memes).

Frank Ocean brought an uh… Robot baby???

Finally, Frank Ocean rocked up with an interesting creature attached to his side.

Instead of posing with a (relatively) normal prop like a sword or bible, the musician rocked up with a green robotic baby that is terrifying, to say the least.

To make matters worse, the green baby moves and blinks, so while Frank was pacing around smiling for the cameras, the robot was staring deep into everyone’s souls.

Matching the creature with bright green hair, Frank wandered around all night with the creature on his hip and I just gotta know whyyy?

This is sure to haunt my nightmares for days.

If you’ve made it this far, congrats. While there are probably a few other wild or whacky things that went down at the Met last night, these are the ones you’ve gotta know to be on top of the memes.

Good luck scrolling through your social media and seeing literally anything else for the rest of the week.
