Hannah Mouncey Can Play AFL in Victoria, Still Barred From National League

She was barred due to "physical disparity".

Last year, Hannah Mouncey was blocked from nominating for the AFLW (Australia's national AFL league for women) due to concerns over a "physical disparity" between her, a transwoman, and her cis female peers in the league.

The decision was heavily criticised at the time, due to the AFL's indecision on the matter and the fact they barred Mouncey the day before nominations were due.

But, since then, the Victorian women's football league (VWFL) has accepted her in their state competition.

Mouncey made a statement via YouTube welcoming the decision, but not thanking the AFL for allowing her to do something the "science and research has supported all along."

The AFL maintains they are committed to inclusiveness, but admit they are still finalising their gender diversity policy.

"Eligibility decisions are generally made by state and local leagues in accordance with the rules and policies of the relevant football body," the AFL said in a statement.

"However, the AFL strongly encourages all Australian football competitions to adopt the AFL's recommendation to facilitate the inclusion of trans players at the community level until the AFL's gender diversity policy is finalised."

Unfortunately, this saga has meant that Mouncey has received a barrage of negative attention by transphobic individuals on her social media channels.

Let's hope this messy and embarrassing situation is fixed up completely so transpeople hoping to have sporting careers in the future can do so without the spectacle and offensive lines of questioning.
