How To Stay Green This Black Friday And Still Cop Some Bargains

Plus, we asked Student Edge members what they thought of sustainable fashion.

Bargains – we all love them.

But how do we reconcile our love of cheap fits with an appreciation of fast fashion and environmental concerns?

When it comes to fashion, sustainability and ethics are becoming more and more important. Young people are often considering the environmental impact of their purchases, and making decisions between brands based on their ethical outcomes.

With big Black Friday sales coming up, clothing sales are going to skyrocket, and so too will the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

But it can be so hard to know which brands act sustainably and ethically.

What makes it more difficult, is that sustainable products often come with a higher price tag, reflecting all the extra work that’s gone into making it an ideal product.

We asked Student Edge members how they felt about sustainable fashion, and most said they look for sustainable outcomes when purchasing clothes.

77% of Student Edge members who responded said they would choose a brand specifically for its sustainable practices, and an astonishing 92% said they had difficulty finding out which brands are sustainable and would be interested in a ‘Green Friday’ sale.

Some members shared their thoughts, saying “we need to care for animals and the environment” and “the fashion industry is the second largest issue in terms of climate change”.

This year, ethical bargain-hunters will be happy to hear there’s a huge new Black Friday option for them.

‘Green Friday’ is a new Aussie startup that’s striving to bring people sustainable clothes alongside deals and savings.

They’re also providing a space where retailers can share information about conscious consumption and shopping with the climate in mind.

This year, Green Friday is a 4-day event that will bring sustainable retailers to customers as an alternative to the environmental impacts of traditional Black Friday sales.

The brands involved have to fit into Green Friday’s sustainability framework that includes environmental issues, supply chain checks, community initiatives, equality and diversity and much more.

Customers interested can sign up here, before Green Friday kicks off this Friday 18 November.
