First Images from "Wonder Woman 1984" Casually Drop a Massive, Tracksuited Spoiler

Spoiler alert for a movie that is still being made and none of us have seen.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and her director Patty Jenkins have released the first images from their upcoming sequel Wonder Woman 1984, and one shows Diana Prince in front of some very period-appropriate TV screens while the other… wait, what the hell? The second one drops a massive spoiler!

As anyone who sat through the first Wonder Woman already knows, Diana’s true love, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), died on a suicide mission to help save the Amazonian princess and, basically, all of Earth. (We forget the specifics, but we remember sobbing about his goodbye for several months afterwards.)

We later learned that the sequel would take place 70 years after the original, with the ageless Diana moving on from WW1 only to be caught in the middle of the Cold War.

So, it’s doubly alarming to see Steve Trevor himself in one of the newly released images; firstly, because he’s dead, and secondly, because he would also be well into his early hundreds if he had survived.

Now, I’m sure this pic of Chris Pine on the set of Wonder Woman 1984 wasn’t just accidentally released by Jenkins’ over-eager social media manager. They want us to speculate about his appearance in the film.

Could it be Steve has been resurrected, and is now similarly ageless (perhaps thanks to some kind of magic potion from Themyscira)? Is this just a dream sequence? Is that a shot of Steve’s heretofore unknown grandson, also named Steve, who Diana will get creepily romantic with too? Is that a shapeshifting imposter? A clone? Or is Pine just playing a new character? (Probably not that last one, as Jenkins specifically welcomes "Steve Trevor" in her tweet, and not "Man in Tracksuit".)

These are all good questions. Well, they're all questions, at the very least.

We probably won’t find out the answer until the movie hits cinemas in November of 2019. Then again, maybe they'll just keep dropping spoilers over the next fourteen months.

Next, they'll be telling us Robin Wright's back too. (Actually, we're down for that.)
