The egg industry might not be the first thing that pops into your head when you’re thinking about a career, but it should be.
It’s one of Australia’s most essential industries, and needs all kinds of people to keep it running.
From animal care and science to logistics, trades, leadership, admin, and even marketing: there’s a career for everyone no matter what you’re interested in or your experience level.

You love the outdoors and being around animals.

Jobs: Farm Hand, Poultry Technician, Egg Collector.
Not only do these kinds of roles offer you a great variety. But they also let you cut your teeth across all areas of an Egg Farm.
You could be looking after the chickens one day, grading and packing eggs or even monitoring hen behaviour.
Other duties include cleaning and servicing sheds, evaluating egg quality, assessing production requirements, stock take and replenishing packaging, operating tools and farm machinery to name a few. But at the heart of it, you’re playing a big part in making sure the farm keeps going.
You love fixing stuff/you’re a practical thinker:

Jobs: Maintenance Fitter, Diesel Mechanic, Electrician, Feed Mill Operator.
Maybe you have experience in a trade and/or you’re looking to gain some experience in your trade. The egg industry can provide that environment!
If you’re someone who can look at a machine and figure out how to make it work with the tools around you, you might be well suited in a Diesel Mechanic, Maintenance Fitter or Feed Mill Operator role.
You’ll be providing solutions for equipment failures and ensuring the equipment and plant are kept in good working order.
You’re a people person and love working in a team.

Jobs: Team Leader, Assistant Manager, Farm Manager
After you gain some experience, you may be looking to take on more responsibilities and help make some big decisions. This could mean taking on a role like a Team Leader or Farm Manager role where you’ll be helping lead teams in different projects and plans around farm operations.
From ensuring the health and productivity of the flock through to overseeing staff and maintaining high-quality egg production standards, these roles are less about telling others what to do, and more about jumping in where needed and helping problem-solve.
You’re tech-savvy and detail-oriented.

Jobs: Feed Mill Coordinator, Data Analyst, Logistics and Warehouse Planner
These roles keep the farm ticking because these individuals make sure operations run smoothly, data is accurate and resources are delivered on time. AKA everything an egg farm needs to keep things going.
If you’re someone who can pick up an error in a ten page document or look at a plan and see a smoother path forward these might the type of jobs for you.
The most important skills to have though are a willingness to learn and a can-do attitude.
You’re business-minded and an admin whiz.

Jobs: HR, Accounting, Project Management, Procurement
Maybe you’re someone with formal training or qualifications in business. There’s opportunity for you to use those skills and learnings within the egg industry.
If you’re interested in working in HR, accounting, project management or procurement there are a range of roles in management, marketing, logistics, finance, human resources and more.
The egg industry is a dynamic one so there are heaps of different roles whether you’re starting your career or are a seasoned professional.
You enjoy science, researching and problem-solving.

Jobs: Poultry Vet, Animal Nutritionist, Poultry Scientist
If science is your bread and butter, then prepare to find heaps of roles within the egg industry. Careers like a Poultry Vet or Animal Nutritionist work closely with egg farmers to help take care of hens. This could include diagnosing and treating hen illnesses, administering medication, design biosecurity protocols, conduct flock inspection and advise on hen welfare.
These jobs will have you hanging out with animals all day and enjoying the outdoors. So, if you’re studying a STEM degree, a job like this in the Egg Industry might suit you.
You could also apply for the AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship if your degree fits the pre-requisites and then gain experience working on an egg farm.
The main ways to find work or gain experience in the egg industry are through job boards like SEEK, Backpacker Job Board, Indeed, Gumtree Jobs and Jora, contacting farms directly that are in your state or location, and through apprenticeships and traineeships.
