Why Gen Z's Rarely Take Their Phone Off Do Not Disturb

In news to everyone (but us Gen Z’s), students' phones are constantly on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode.

We don’t know about everyone else, but this is the best way to exist.

While others might utilise this function so they can concentrate on a task, Gen Z’s actually have their phone on DND for another reason…

The phone anxiety is real.

Research released by CommBank and More in 2023, found that 87 per cent of Gen Z’s prefer to handle “unpleasant tasks” via text message rather than over a phone call.

And 49 per cent admit speaking on the phone makes them anxious.

Which totally explains why so many Gen Z’s leave their phone on DND.

To find out if this is true, we asked our members aged 14-29 how often their phones are on DND.

Of the 1000 members surveyed in our June Member Survey, 25.9 per cent said they had their phone on DND most of the time, and 17.6 per cent said they were shut off all the time. 

And it seems like other Gen Z's are exactly like us too.

When are we plugged in?

Is there ever a time when we want to actually be on our phones?

We might not want anyone to call us, but we do like constant access to the internet.

72 per cent of Gen Z access the internet for entertainment and 51 per cent depend on the internet daily for access to people and connections.

Social media is also a big one with one survey found that most students/Gen Z's use their smartphone for video streaming, music and podcasts. The average Gen Z spends 3.4 hours a day streaming videos. 

It makes sense to be connected, but on our terms and whenever and however we want.
