Cozzie Livs are Rising like Crazy, So Here’s How You Can Tally Some Money Wins

Time to get some bang for your buck.

It’s hard not to be feeling the financial brunt.

The cost-of-living crisis has seen bills skyrocket, price tags rise in supermarket aisles, even our streaming subscriptions have soared (if you’re the unlucky one paying for them).

If you’ve been pinching pennies lately, you’re not alone. In fact, in a recent Student Edge member survey, we asked young Aussies aged 12-25 how they felt, and 71% said the thing they’re literally most concerned about, is rising inflation .

What more can we do to cut costs? We’ve put together our top tips to save some cash across the biggest areas of everyday spending.

Groceries.

Food has to be one of the most obvious rises in cost-of-living, with the total figure on your receipt at the checkout seemingly long enough to look like a phone number.

If you’ve got a little flexibility, changing up where and when you shop could save you a few bucks. Checking out discount grocers can be good for cheap fruit and veg, or hitting the supermarket close to closing time is best to pick up cheap meat.

You could also try increasing your purchases of tinned, dried or frozen foods instead of fresh, as they’re almost always cheaper.

Transport.

Petrol is a big ol’ expense and it only seems to be getting more and more pricey, which can make getting around on a day-to-day basis low key stressful.

Best way to keep fuel costs down? Compare the prices and don’t just run your tank down to empty so you have to pull into the nearest, not necessarily cheapest, station. Take advantage of apps that compare prices, and supermarket discount programs.

No matter where you are in Aus, there are always discounts to be had on public transport too–especially for students! Get yourself a concession card if you’re eligible and suss out when the off-peak times are to get the cheapest rides.

Bills.

Did your folks always tell you to turn the lights off when you left a room as a kid? Do you totally get why now?

Trying to use less power or water or gas is the easiest way to keep your bills down. You could get a smart meter to monitor how much energy you’re chewing through and take action to be more efficient.Run your appliances on eco-friendly settings or close the blinds to keep the heat/cool in.

Fun stuff.

Entertainment is usually the first thing anyone suggests to cut in order to save cash, but how on earth do we keep ourselves amused if we delete all our subscription services and stop going out?

Firstly, you could stop paying for books and join a library instead. It’s low effort and high reward. You can get thousands of books, magazines, audio books, movies and newspapers for freeeee.

And always be on the lookout for cheap deals and discounts. Student Edge has heaps to get you started. You could see a movie at Hoyts or go ten-pin bowling for cheap or take advantage of the many many food discounts on offer. Check them out.
