Confessions Of A Teacher's Pet

Confessions Of A Teacher's Pet

To be or not to be… teacher’s pet?

Be it primary school or high school, you can never escape the horrid title of "teacher's pet" once you’ve earned it. Many call it social suicide. So why do so many people dread the idea of it?

Being the "apple of your teacher’s eye" could be what actually gives you the upper hand above all the students in the class, but what does that mean for the rest of your peers? Are they just the extras of the class?

This is when being the teacher’s pet can be a not so great role. Sure, you gain that appreciation and respect from your teacher. You also gain hatred and envy from your peers.

I clearly remember when I was in primary school, I used to be favoured by most teachers and was labelled the "teacher's pet" in my class. I loved the role at the beginning, but as time went on, that role started to become some sort of a curse, which would keep following me no matter how much I tried to run away from it.

Why you ask? Well, as time went on, so increased the hatred I was receiving for always getting the extra praise for my hard work. Okay, it may sound a bit dramatic, as not everyone turned their backs on me. However, some of my friends started teasing me, which got me wondering what is actually wrong with being the teacher’s pet.

And honestly, there was nothing wrong with it. I would always be told that I gained the title through hard work and determination. However, I didn't believe it. I let the people around me influence the way I thought and let me feel ashamed about being something I once felt proud of.

The rest of my primary education was not so enjoyable. Now that I look back on that time I regret not believing in myself more and allowing others to influence me so much.

Honestly being the teacher's pet isn't what it’s cut out to be. (I should know after being one.) Usually the person who is most favoured are usually the ones asked to help the teacher with daily errands, whether it is to carry textbooks or help print worksheets.

To end things on a high note, I still advise you to be who you are and rock it because you may find being the teacher's pet could be an experience you never forget, good or bad. Most importantly, always remember not to become someone who is influenced by the words of others.
