Coles Croissants Won a 'Product of the Year' Prize, So Excuse Me While I Race to the Shops

The Consumer Survey of Product Innovation has listed the top supermarket products of the year for 2021 with a bakery product from Coles taking out the top spot in the bakery category.

This is a pretty big deal ‘cos this survey is the world’s largest consumer-based awards program and is now in its 12th year in Australia. Essentially it recognises product innovation so that you can get your hands on the goods at the shops while also saving time and money.

Basically, they determine the winners by evaluating 9,000 consumer responses by using six key criteria, which include:

  • Relevance – Is the product fulfilling a need or addressing a problem?
  • Uniqueness – Does is stand out and bring something new to the category?
  • Excitement – How excited are they to use the product? Would they spread the word?
  • Likeability – Does it deliver what you want?
  • Distinctiveness – Does it add something new to its category?
  • Innovation – Is it an innovative product?

Coles actually had a record number of 11 wins this year in bakery, coffee, body care and desserts. But who cares about all that, we know you’re here for the croissants.

According to Coles, the Traditional Recipe Croissants are crafted (ooh, fancy) with premium French butter and are based off a traditional European recipe.

At just $4 for a box of two, the pastry is rested for a number of hours which apparently allows the buttery flavors and aroma time to develop, resulting in an "irresistible flaky texture and a delicious rich taste". I don’t know about you, but that sounds delicious af, and I don’t even eat dairy products.

The flaky bois are also made in France, so you know they’re authentic.

According to the survey, shoppers have also really taken a liking to ‘healthier’ and plant-based products with eight out of 29 winners falling under the vegetarian/vegan or health food categories.

"This is the first time in our Product of the Year Awards history that we’ve had this many meat-alternative and vegan products participate and successfully win an award, especially from surprising new brands such as 7-11 and V2 foods. This year we are also seeing our first ever Alcohol-Free alternatives category, with Lyre’s taking out the top spot for their non-alcohol spirits range," Product of the Year Director Sarah Connelly said in a statement.

So, based on this info are you headed to the health food aisle or Coles bakery?
