An Army Of Cats Has Taken Over An Island In Japan

In news that will either sound to you like a dream come true or a living nightmare, a remote island in southern Japan has become overrun with feral cats.

According to the ABC, the 1.6km island of Aoshima is home to 120 felines. They outnumber the human population six to one. See the adorable/terrifying visuals for yourself above.

The non-cats living on the island – and there are fewer than 20 of them – are all stubborn pensioners, seemingly without allergies.

The island was once a fishing village, where cats were introduced to deal with the plague of mice burrowing in fishermen’s boats. This seems much worse, however.

As the human population decreased, cat breeding went unchecked. Today, Aoshima is known locally as Cat Island.

Tourists are now flocking to the island to see what exactly it looks like when 120 cats cough up fur balls in total synchronicity. Spoiler alert: it's probably chilling.
