Can A Song Change Your Life?

Two years later, Frozen keeps on scoring.

“Let it go, let it go...” You've probably heard that phrase sung a million and one times, in a thousand different places: by kids in the street, park or shopping centre; over the radio; in the elevator, and, to begin with, during the Academy Award winning movie Frozen.

Nevertheless, in the year and a half since Frozen’s release, “Let It Go” has become my all-time-favourite song, and I know it has changed my life forever. Though performed by a myriad of diverse artists, I deeply enjoy Idina Menzel's original version most of all.

So how has this one song changed my life? It is the single, powerful message behind it: hope. Hope, in my own words, is the confident desire that something will happen, no matter how unlikely or impossible it may seem. “Let It Go” is a song of hope, representing the breaking free of Elsa, the character voiced by Menzel, from the fear of her powers. This allowed her to be filled with true joy for, well, the first time in forever, which you can tell by the captivating chorus.

Elsa realises her powers give her the freedom to be the individual she was born to be. For me, the song's message really touches my heart; that hope is the place where you find true happiness, breaking the chains of fear that once held you captive, and living as if nothing can bring you down. This was and is my personal desire; that my fears of socialising (especially with girls) would vanish; that my fear of performing would fade; that my fear of what others think about me would disappear.

I have held this hope since I first listened to “Let It Go” at the beginning of 2014, and, as of today, all those fears have gone. I am now able to positively socialise with everyone in my grade (and I do mean everyone), my stage fright has faded despite earlier being embarrassed on stage, and, because of the combination of these two, my fear of others' thoughts toward me have significantly diminished. And this was all because of “Let It Go.”

“Let It Go” gives me peace of mind and the confidence that what I desire will come to being. Fears have significantly faded, and now I am living life to the fullest. The point where I am in my life since first listening to “Let It Go” is performing in front of 10,000 people at the Queensland Music Festival, attending a fundraising dinner for people in Vanuatu, and having many loyal friends to spend time with (as well as being a loyal friend). Therefore, with absolute certainty, I can say one song can change your life forever.
