Calls For Calm In Kalgoorlie, Following Protest Over Death Of Teen Elijah Doughty

Community elders have called for calm in Kalgoorlie, where violent protests erupted following the death of 14-year-old Elijah Doughty.

On Monday, a 55-year-old man was charged with manslaughter after his utility vehicle allegedly struck a stolen motorbike being ridden by Doughty.

According to the ABC, police say the stolen motorbike was linked to the driver of the utility.

Yesterday, approximately 200 protesters awaited the driver’s arrival at the courthouse in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Their demonstration reportedly turned violent, with some attempting to force their way into the courthouse. A dozen officers were injured and numerous protesters were arrested, with damage being made to car and building windows. Courthouse staff were evacuated during the protest.

Footage emerged of Doughty’s 18-year-old cousin, Hayley Garlett, standing between protesters and police, to protect the officers.

In its wake, Indigenous community leaders spoke out against the riot, with Aubrey Lynch telling the ABC, “we don’t like violence anywhere in any case, because violence causes more trouble.”

Nonetheless, they noted that tensions had been inflamed by posts on Facebook, where the Aboriginal residents of Kalgoorlie were being threatened, along with the lenient charge made against Doughty’s alleged killer.

"What are they going to do about it?” asked Bruce Smith.

“The justice system, is it working for all Australians?"

Last night, a peaceful vigil was held at the location of the 14-year-old's death, replete with flowers, candles and donated food.

Today, the 55-year-old driver appeared in Perth court via video link.
