Brooke Blurton Becomes Australia's First Bisexual, Indigenous "Bachelorette"

Give us a gender diverse cast!
If you've been on social media at all today, you'd know that Brooke Blurton has been cast as The Bachelorette for 2021, making her the first Indigenous and bisexual woman to take the coveted spot.
Blurton is obviously a fantastic choice to be the new Bachelorette, having previously been a contestant on The Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise. On top of that, she's also an excellent advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community.
You might remember the West Australian youth worker was the hot favourite to win the heart of ‘The Honey Badger’ Nick Cummins in 2018's season of The Bachelor before she abruptly quit the show (I'm still convinced he would have picked her).
Brooke, who is a proud Noongar-Yamatji woman, said she was very excited to become the next Bachelorette.
“I’ve done it twice before and now, having the opportunity to choose my person and who I want in my life, is a truly unique and special experience,” she said in a media release.
“My perfect person is someone that loves me for me. I hope they offer shared values and compassion for others. All the dreamy things! I’m so excited and hope that I finally find that person I’ve been waiting for.”
🚨The 2021 Bachelorette has been announced & it’s the AMAZING, kind, clever & stunning Brooke Blurton 🌹 @BrookeBlurton is bi so suitors will be mixed genders 🌈 This is history making stuff & the kind of representation that saves lives fam 😭 ❤️ I’m so happy! #BacheloretteAU

While Brooke is the first bisexual Bachelorette, it's not entirely clear how gender diverse this season's cast is going to be.
At this stage, Channel 10 is only calling for "both men and women" to apply. We're keeping our fingers crossed that more gender inclusive language is used, so that this season's cast is truly gender diverse.

Speaking on Aussie podcast The Babble last year, the 26-year-old said she wasn’t sure if Australia was “ready” for a bisexual Bachelorette.
Don’t worry gurl, we’re ready.

My chance of being the first maori, fat, queer, gender-fluid, atypical, depressed, bisexual bachelorette is closer than ever

Host of the show Osher Günsberg said Blurton’s casting for the new season shows how diverse Australia is.
“We are a nation of people from so many backgrounds, so many different cultures and so many different experiences,” Günsberg said on Twitter.
“Yet we all have one thing in common—we all want to be loved in a way that is meaningful to us.”
Preach Osher!
The Bachelorette starring Blurton will debut on Channel 10 and 10Play later this year.
