Britney Spears’ Father Jamie Spears Finally Steps Down From Her Conservatorship

She’s now one step closer to her freedom.

After 13 years of power over her estate and life, Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears has officially stepped down as conservator in the most unexpected turn of events for the #FreeBritney movement.

On Thursday, Mr Spears filed his response to Britney’s petition to suspend his power in the Los Angeles Superior Court, announcing his decision to step down due to the largely public nature of the battle between him and his daughter.

Essentially, the public and online movement from Britney’s fans has played a huge role in giving Britney some of her freedom back.

For those who aren't entirely familiar with the #FreeBritney movement or need a quick recap, Britney was put under conservatorship after her very public breakdown in 2008. At the time, Britney was put under a '5150 hold' in a psychiatric hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The singer's father petitioned courts for an emergency 'temporary' conservatorship, claiming that Britney wasn't able to care for herself as a result of her mental health struggles. From there, he was given the legal right to make decisions regarding Britney's finances, health, business deals and personal life.

After some unusual and brief social media posts, particularly on TikTok, fans and social media users started expressing concern for the singer’s wellbeing. This then sparked the #FreeBritney movement, with millions of her followers and fans petitioning and rallying to free her from the conservatorship.

Since the revelation of her situation, Britney has spoken up more than ever before, making a statement in court, telling them she wants to “press charges”, and that she believes her father should be in jail.

The news comes just a month after a judge denied Britney the request to have her father removed from her conservatorship on the grounds that they were unaware of her request to leave until her speech in court back in June.

While Mr Spears' reasoning for stepping down from the conservatorship yesterday was due to the public backlash and Britney’s petition, his attorney has stated that there are “no actual grounds for suspending or removing” him.

"There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr Spears as the Conservator of the Estate under Probate Code section 2650. And it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms Spears' best interests," the court document states.

"Nevertheless, even as Mr Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.

"So even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter's new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator. As the Court has likely surmised, before Ms Spears' new attorney arrived, Mr Spears had already been working on such a transition with Ms Spears' former court-appointed counsel, Sam Ingham."

In response to Mr Spears’ decision, Britney’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart issued a statement detailing his plans to still investigate Mr Spears’ conduct.

"This is a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice," Mr Rosengart said in a statement obtained by Variety.

"I announced in Court on July 14 that, after 13 years of the status quo, it was time for Mr Spears to be suspended or removed as conservator and that my firm and I would move aggressively and expeditiously for that outcome.

"Twelve days later, my firm filed a Petition for Mr Spears's suspension and removal based on strong, insurmountable legal grounds, which were unequivocally supported by the law and all parties involved, including Jodi Montgomery, Britney Spears, and her medical team."

While Mr spears has stepped down, it does not yet mean that Britney is free, as her conservatorship still remains in place.

Now, with Mr Spears’ removed from Britney’s conservatorship case, Britney’s lawyers end goal is to finally remove her from the arrangement.

"We all need to focus on one thing, and one thing only - the health, well-being and best interests of Britney Spears,” Mr Montgomery said.
