Returnal took out the top spot and Aussie developers won big.
The BAFTA Game Awards were broadcast this morning and it was free of public violence, and full of well-deserved recognition of the best games from 2021.
Not only do the BAFTA Game Awards recognise the games in-and-of themselves, but the talent who made them—including sound designers, voice actors and artists. There’s a whole ecosystem in the gaming industry of people working hard to create incredible art.
Aussies won big at the Awards, with home-grown developers Witch Beam and Beethoven & Dinosaur taking some trophies home for Unpacking and The Artful Escape respectfully.
If you’re deciding what game to buy next, this list probably isn’t a bad place to start.

Developed by Housemarque, the game that took out the top spot has been praised for its incredible visuals and combat.
Returnal is a third-person shooter game available on PlayStation 5 which follows Selene, an Astra scout who gets trapped in a time loop on the planet Atropos. It’s nightmarish, heart-pounding, brutal, and well-deserved of the award.
EE Game of the Year: Unpacking.
Put to the public, the Game of the Year was Unpacking by Aussie developers, Witch Beam.
Self-described as a “zen puzzle game about unpacking a life”, it’s a gorgeous and delightful game available on PC, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
